One Big Huge Update

Since it has been soooo long since I have posted anything, I figured I would just catch up on everything in case I don't post again for a while. We did another blood test a couple of weeks ago and everything is still good. Her platelets were still low (58,000) but that is up from 23,000!!! And no blasts showed up in her blood which of course is excellent. We went in to the ENT because she never passed her newborn hearing test and because she was so little, they couldn't really see in her ears anyway so they just wanted us to wait until she got bigger. I knew at 9 months that she was suddenly hearing quite well so I didn't push seeing them again until she was 18 months. The doctor looked in her ears and said there was no fluid in her ears and her ear drums looked shiny which I guess is how they want it to look. She will refer us for a hearing test and she said that as long as she can hear to at least 20 decibels (I think), then that is all she needs to pick up speech. So thankfully, no tubes are needed!!
Then the next day, we did a follow up with her cardiologist whom she hadn't seen since she was 5 months old. He is following her to see if her PFO and VSD (small holes in her heart) have closed. Due to the many blood draws that Ella has had in her life, she has officially hit the point where she doesn't want any doctors touching her. She will sit and flirt with them until they touch her and then she starts whining like there is no tomorrow. Of course this made it hard for the cardiologist to hear but he said he didn't hear any murmurs. I asked him if we would do an echocardiogram to be certain if the holes had closed and he said "Do you think she will be less afraid next year?" Like I know how she will be a year from now. I told him that I am not afraid to hold her down so let's just go for it this year. If the holes have closed, then we will be done with seeing the cardiologist so I figure, why wait!!
And lastly, we have FINALLY gotten Ella authorized to get some OT to try to get her to eat solid foods. I ended up just asking my pediatrician if we can do it through our private insurance instead of waiting on the state to provide it. She would be 10 and still drinking formula if I wait on the State of CA!! So we have kept our pediatrician pretty busy getting us referrals this past month. Ella is weighing in at 23 lbs 3 oz this month....so I guess the formula is sustaining her just fine for now. Below is a bunch of pictures that probably should each be their own post but I may never catch up if I don't just post them all now.

Ella - 19 months

One day I decided to do some real pigtails and they actually kind of worked. The long piece of hair on the top of her head that usually makes up her antenna type ponytail is now almost long enough to reach to her pig tails. I just put her on her little car and she sits still pretty well.

I think this is my new favorite picture

Pigtails......post nap!!

Below you will see lots of pictures of Ella's new favorite activity......standing. She is finally pulling up to everything she can reach and then just standing there. She does it with such ease now and it seems like just yesterday she couldn't do it at all. Just another example of the little milestones that we usually take for granted. I just love that now I can stare at her cute butt!!

Another new thing that Ella is doing......getting in the kitchen cupboards. So on Daddy's last day off......the childproof latches went on. I can finally relax again. We only had 2 broken crystal bowls!! Little stinker!!

Needless to say, Daddy has been pretty busy childproofing lately. He finally got the gate installed for the stairs but not before Ella quietly made it to the top TWICE without any of us knowing!! Of course when I finally decided to do a video of her climbing, she takes her sweet time doing it. As usual, sorry for the grainy quality of the video!!

A Great Adoption Poem

I came across this poem on Lera's blog and just loved it. It does seem so overwhelming to me when I visit Reece's Rainbow and see all those children that need a family. It seems hopeless but this poem just makes me realize that anything can be accomplished one person at a time.

The Starfish Saver

As I walked along the seashore
This young boy greeted me.
He was tossing stranded starfish
Back to the deep blue sea.
I said "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
There's a million stranded starfish
Does it matter, anyway?"

And he said, "It matters to this one.
It deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll return it to the sea.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me.

I walked into an orphanage,
A young woman greeted me.
She was adopting a little girl,
She was excited, I could see.
I said, "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
She's only one of thousands,
Does it matter anyway?"

And she said, "It matters to this one.
She deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll help her be what she can be.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."

Halloween Through The Years

Adrienne did a post a couple of weeks ago in which she posted pictures from Halloween's past. I wasn't really ever one to dress up for Halloween but I did have one picture from when I was in college and dressed up. The rest are all of the kids. I started when Abbey was a baby taking them to JC Penney's and getting a professional picture in their costume and haven't missed a year since. I know this is kind of late for a Halloween post but I wanted to wait until I had this year's photo back.

Also, I have to apologize profusely to those of you with blogs for being so flaky in my commenting lately. I have been diligently reading them all but seem to always be in too much of a hurry to write a comment or at a loss for words. Just please know that you are never far from my thoughts :)

Halloween 2009

Halloween day started early for us as both Abbey and Emma had 8am soccer games which meant being there by 7:30. Since we were done with sports by 9:30, we basically had the whole day to do Halloween things. We had one more pumpkin patch in town to go to and had decided to save this one for today. It has a really big corn maze to go through so we thought it would be a fun family thing to do. Of course there were plenty of other attractions as well. Ella got to have her second pony ride of the season, there was a big dried corn kernel pit to play in (I have never seen one of these before and all of the kids loved it) and then face painting as well. The maze was fun and of course I got NO pictures of it. I really regretted not having brought the jogger stroller as it was pretty rough terrain for the regular stroller. Abbey and my nephew Ethan got separated from us (we told them not to run ahead) but I wasn't too worried as there were people stationed throughout the maze to help you get out if needed. Emma was our navigator and was working along with a couple of high school girls to find our way. I think it took us 30-45 minutes but we did eventually make it out. Followed shortly by Ethan and then Abbey (they had gotten separated too). Then we went home to do chores, yard work and some last minute decorating of the front porch. The kids (and daddy) then carved their pumpkins and I am so bummed that I didn't get any pics of that either!! Finally it was time to trick or treat. I just took Ella out to a few houses on our street. She kept getting mad every time we would leave someone's front door. I couldn't figure out why. Then she just was done!! So I brought her home and daddy and Auntie took the big kids back out. Ella finally settled back down and thoroughly enjoyed helping the big kids go through and trade their candy.

Abbey got a blue spider web face so it would match

We now know that Ella does not like clowns!!!

I don't think Ella wanted to be held at this moment

Better now that she is in her stroller

Candy anyone???

Ds Halloween Party

Friday night we went to a Halloween party for a group here in town. It isn't specifically a Down syndrome group....it is a group for any kind of disability but it just so happened that the people who were there this time, were all Ds families. It was originially planned for a park but they decided to move it to someone's home as they were worried the weather might be too cool. We were quite late and it was pretty crowded so it was hard for me to get any photos of all of the older kids but after most everyone left, I was finally able to get pics of the 3 little ones in the group. These are the kiddos that I have recently met and Ella has had playdates with. We all went to the party together and this was the first time that we have gotten them all 3 together at once. As you can tell, I wasn't able to get any "great" pics but at least I got something!!

Ella and Hannah at my house waiting for Haden to arrive
(Hannah's ghost onesie was Ella's last year)

The only picture I got of Ella, Haden and Hannah together.
Not a chance at getting them all 3 to smile at the same time.

Ella got tic-tac-toe!!

Look at those big kids standing!!
